The enterprise computing challenges are: innovation, going green, social networks, and virtual worlds. Innovation is the introduction of new equipment or methods. In the past, a company was primarily focused on operational excellence. Now innovation drives the wheels of IT. Social responsibility implies that an entity, whether it is a government, corporation, not for profit organization, or individual, has a responsibility to society. Sustainable, or"green," IT describes the manufacture, management, use, and disposal of information technology in a way that minimizes damage to the environment, which is a critical part of a corporation's responsibility. As a result, the term has many different meanings, depending on whether you are a manufacturer, manager, or user of technology. This portion of the chapter covers energy consumption, recycling IT equipment, and greener IT. Recent IT trends that enterprises are paying attention to today include going green (i.e., becoming socially responsible) and leveraging social networks made affordable by recent Web 2.0 technologies. Many companies are turning to social networks and related technology to stay in touch with former employees. Companies save training costs if former employees are rehired. Social networks also help forge community with, and among, would-be customers. Virtual is the theme of Web 2.0. Two primary types of virtual must be considered when looking at the 21st century world: virtual workforces and virtual worlds. The concept of virtual became a reality as today organizations are allowing their employees from anywhere, forming a virtual workforce.
